AbbVie Begins Construction of New Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Facility in North Chicago
Tuesday, September 30, 2025
AbbVie has started building a new active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility in North Chicago, Illinois.
The development marks an important step in the company’s plan to strengthen its manufacturing network in the United States.
The new site will expand AbbVie’s chemical synthesis capabilities and shift part of its API production from Europe and Asia to the U.S. This will support the domestic supply of medicines in areas such as neuroscience, immunology, and oncology.
Over the next decade, AbbVie intends to invest more than $10 billion in its U.S. manufacturing network, including multiple new plants. The North Chicago project, announced earlier with a $195 million investment, will create new jobs and add to the company’s existing operations in Illinois.
AbbVie employs around 28,000 people across all 50 states and Puerto Rico, with more than 11,000 based in Illinois.
The company’s U.S. manufacturing footprint currently supports over 6,000 jobs across 11 sites.
