AbbVie to Invest $1.4 Billion in New Manufacturing Campus in North Carolina

Thursday, April 23, 2026

AbbVie has announced plans to invest $1.4 billion in the development of a pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina. The 185-acre site will incorporate advanced manufacturing systems, laboratory technologies, and artificial intelligence to support the production of medicines across immunology, neuroscience, and oncology.

This marks AbbVie’s first major investment in North Carolina. The location, near Research Triangle Park, was selected due to the region’s skilled workforce and capacity for future expansion. Construction is set to begin this year, with completion expected by the end of 2028.

The new campus will create 734 jobs over the next four years, including roles for engineers, scientists, manufacturing staff, and laboratory technicians. In addition, more than 2,000 construction jobs are expected to be generated during the development phase.

The project forms part of AbbVie’s broader plan to invest $100 billion in research, development, and manufacturing in the United States over the next decade. The first phase will include facilities for small volume parenteral (SVP) drug manufacturing, along with laboratories, a warehouse, office spaces, and employee support facilities.

SVP products are sterile injectable medicines, typically under 100 mL, such as vials, prefilled syringes, and cartridges used for injections or infusions. Once completed, the site will serve as AbbVie’s US centre of excellence for SVP manufacturing, supplying medicines both domestically and internationally.

AbbVie currently employs around 29,000 people across the United States. Over the past year, the company has committed more than $2.2 billion towards US manufacturing investments, including projects in North Carolina, Illinois, Arizona, and Massachusetts.
