Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre Develops Clinical-Grade iPSCs with Exclusive Virus-Free
Saturday, January 04, 2025
The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) has achieved a major milestone in stem cell research by successfully developing clinical-grade induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for the first time in the Middle East.
This advancement, made possible through a proprietary, virus-free protocol, adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and meets stringent international requirements for clinical applications.
iPSCs, a revolutionary tool in regenerative medicine, have the potential to treat a wide range of diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as well as conditions such as diabetes.
Created by reprogramming adult cells, such as skin or blood cells, into an embryonic-like state, iPSCs can differentiate into various cell types. Their ability to be derived from a patient’s own cells reduces the risk of immune rejection, eliminating the need for immunosuppressive treatments.
ADSCC’s virus-free method avoids genetic modification, minimising risks such as cell transformation or tumour development. This innovation ensures the cells are safe and suitable for therapeutic use, setting a benchmark in the region for regenerative therapies.
The centre’s exclusive protocol strengthens its capabilities to produce high-quality iPSCs locally, reducing reliance on external sources. This achievement is aligned with the UAE’s goals to lead in healthcare innovation, positioning ADSCC as a key player in advancing regenerative medicine.
In addition to local efforts, ADSCC has partnered with Kyoto University’s Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) and Japan-based Rege Nephro to explore diabetes treatments using pancreatic beta cells derived from iPSCs.
These initiatives aim to develop novel therapies for type 1 diabetes and improve drug screening for type 2 diabetes, with research facilities established in both Abu Dhabi and Japan.
ADSCC’s progress demonstrates its commitment to pioneering safe, innovative, and patient-focused solutions in personalised medicine, marking a significant step forward in transforming healthcare.
