Algen Biotechnologies Enters into Partnership with AstraZeneca to Advance AI-Driven Drug Discovery in Immunology

Monday, October 06, 2025

Algen Biotechnologies has entered into a multi-target partnership with AstraZeneca to accelerate the discovery of new therapeutic targets in immunology.

As part of the agreement, Algen will apply its AI-powered AlgenBrain™ platform to support preclinical drug discovery, while AstraZeneca will obtain exclusive rights to develop and commercialise therapies for a specific group of targets identified through the collaboration.

Under the terms of the deal, Algen will receive an upfront payment and may earn additional milestone payments related to development, regulatory and commercial achievements, with the overall value of the agreement reaching up to $555 million.

The partnership aims to combine Algen’s functional genomics and AI capabilities with AstraZeneca’s expertise in translational science and clinical development to improve the understanding of complex chronic inflammatory conditions and accelerate the creation of new treatments.

The AlgenBrain™ platform models disease progression by tracking billions of RNA changes in human, disease-relevant cells and linking them to therapeutic outcomes through high-throughput gene modulation. This approach helps identify novel genes that may play a causal role in disease and could serve as potential therapeutic targets.

By grounding early discovery in human biology, the platform seeks to improve translational accuracy, increase the likelihood of clinical success, and enable the development of more effective therapies.

The collaboration reflects a broader shift in the pharmaceutical industry towards data-driven, biology-first methods in drug discovery, aiming to enhance precision and predictive power across diverse therapeutic areas.
