Ascendis Pharma and Novo Nordisk Partner on TransCon Technology for Metabolic and Cardiovascular Treatments
Tuesday, November 05, 2024
Ascendis Pharma has granted Novo Nordisk A/S an exclusive worldwide license for its TransCon technology platform to advance Novo Nordisk products in metabolic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, and on a product-by-product basis for cardiovascular diseases.
The agreement sets provisions requiring that certain products using TransCon technology are identified and developed in metabolic diseases to maintain exclusivity in this field, with additional requirements for cardiovascular disease applications.
Novo Nordisk also gains exclusive rights to expand any resulting metabolic disease products into other therapeutic areas.
The first project under this collaboration focuses on a once-monthly GLP-1 receptor agonist designed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. Ascendis is set to receive up to $285 million in total payments, including upfront, development, and regulatory milestones for this lead program.
It will also be eligible for additional sales-based milestones and tiered royalties on global sales. For each further product candidate within metabolic or cardiovascular diseases, Ascendis may receive payments of up to $77.5 million in development and regulatory milestones, along with sales-based milestones and royalties on global sales.
Ascendis will oversee early development stages of TransCon product candidates under the agreement, with Novo Nordisk funding these initial development phases and managing clinical development, regulatory processes, manufacturing, and commercialization efforts.
This partnership supports Ascendis’s strategic aim to expand its TransCon technology beyond endocrinology rare diseases into broader therapeutic fields.
