Aspect Biosystems and Novo Nordisk Expand Collaboration in Next Phase of Diabetes Cell Therapy Development

Wednesday, January 21, 2026

Aspect Biosystems and Novo Nordisk have announced a new phase of their collaboration focused on developing advanced cellular medicines for diabetes.

The partnership, which began in 2023, aims to create therapies that can replace, repair, or support damaged biological functions, with the long-term goal of delivering disease-modifying or potentially curative treatments. The latest agreement builds on progress already made and reflects both companies’ shared ambition to accelerate innovation in diabetes care.

Under the new phase, Aspect has obtained rights to Novo Nordisk’s stem cell-derived islet cell and hypoimmune cell engineering technologies. Aspect will take the lead on development, manufacturing, and commercialisation, while Novo Nordisk will retain defined options to increase its involvement during later stages of development and commercial rollout.

Novo Nordisk will also make an additional equity investment in Aspect and provide research funding to support the advancement of these programmes. In return, Novo Nordisk will be eligible for milestone payments and royalties linked to future product sales.

As part of the agreement, selected cell therapy research, development, and manufacturing capabilities from Novo Nordisk’s operations in the United States and Denmark will be integrated into Aspect’s Canada-based platform. This move is expected to strengthen Aspect’s end-to-end capabilities and broaden access to specialised expertise.

Aspect is applying its platform to develop a new generation of cellular medicines for serious metabolic and endocrine diseases. This includes an islet replacement therapy for type 1 diabetes that aims to restore blood glucose control without the need for long-term immune suppression. These therapies are being designed as allogeneic products, allowing for scalable, off-the-shelf manufacturing.

Together, the companies aim to combine Novo Nordisk’s long-standing experience in diabetes with Aspect’s expertise in cell therapy to advance potentially curative treatments for people living with the disease.
