BioArctic Signs USD 30 Million Collaboration Agreement with Novartis for BrainTransporter™
Tuesday, August 26, 2025
BioArctic AB has signed an option, collaboration, and licence agreement with Novartis Pharma AG to develop a potential treatment that combines BioArctic’s BrainTransporter™ technology with a Novartis antibody for neurodegenerative diseases.
BrainTransporter is a technology designed to enable biological drugs, such as antibodies, to cross the blood–brain barrier using the transferrin receptor. It supports active transport into the brain, which may allow broader distribution, improved efficacy, enhanced safety, and more convenient dosing. The platform is being applied to several of BioArctic’s internal projects and is positioned for future partnerships.
As part of the agreement, BioArctic will receive an upfront payment of USD 30 million. Novartis will review the results from the initial research and may choose to exercise its option to license any drug candidate generated. If this option is taken, BioArctic could receive up to USD 772 million in additional milestone payments, along with tiered mid-single digit royalties on global sales if the product reaches the market.
During the collaboration, BioArctic will work on generating a new drug candidate using its BrainTransporter platform together with Novartis’s proprietary antibody. Should Novartis proceed, it will assume full responsibility for the global development and commercialisation of the candidate.
This agreement marks the third collaboration involving BioArctic’s BrainTransporter technology. The company retains rights to the platform outside the scope of these agreements, allowing further opportunities in other therapy areas.
