Boehringer Ingelheim and Re-Vana Therapeutics Partners to Advance Long-Acting Eye Disease Treatments

Tuesday, July 29, 2025

Boehringer Ingelheim has entered a strategic collaboration and licence agreement with Re-Vana Therapeutics, a US and UK-based company specialising in ocular therapeutics and drug delivery technologies.

The partnership aims to develop extended-release treatments for eye diseases that could significantly reduce the frequency of intravitreal injections.

Millions of people worldwide suffer from vision loss, which can impact independence and quality of life. Current treatment options often require regular injections directly into the eye, presenting a considerable burden for patients and affecting treatment adherence. Re-Vana’s drug delivery platform is designed to release medicines over a six to 12-month period, potentially improving compliance and overall treatment outcomes.

The collaboration will allow Boehringer Ingelheim to explore the integration of Re-Vana’s technology with its existing ophthalmology pipeline, which includes four candidates in Phase II development. The companies plan to initiate up to three new projects per year under the agreement. Re-Vana will lead feasibility and early development efforts, while Boehringer Ingelheim will manage clinical development, regulatory approvals, and global commercialisation.

The agreement includes provisions for upfront and milestone payments, with the total potential value exceeding US$1 billion for the initial three targets. Re-Vana is also eligible to receive royalties on future net sales. Boehringer Ingelheim will have exclusive rights to the selected targets.
