Boehringer Ingelheim and Tessellate Bio Partners to Develop Precision Treatments for Difficult-to-treat Cancers
Thursday, April 24, 2025
Boehringer Ingelheim has entered into a research collaboration and global licensing agreement with Tessellate Bio, a company specialising in precision oncology.
Together, they plan to develop a new class of oral treatments for cancers that are currently difficult to treat.
Cancer remains one of the most serious health challenges worldwide, and many types still lack effective treatment options. This partnership will focus on targeting tumours that rely on a process known as alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) for their growth. ALT is found in approximately 10–15% of all cancers and is often linked to poor outcomes and limited targeted therapies.
As part of the agreement, Tessellate Bio will receive an upfront payment, research funding, and milestone payments related to scientific progress. If all goals are met, the total value of the deal could exceed €500 million.
Tessellate Bio has created inhibitors that act on a specific, undisclosed target. This target is crucial for the survival and growth of ALT positive cancer cells. Blocking it has been shown to increase DNA damage and stress during cell replication, eventually leading to the death of tumour cells. Importantly, healthy cells are not affected, as they do not rely on the same mechanism.
The collaboration supports Boehringer Ingelheim’s broader strategy in oncology research and underlines its commitment to delivering innovative treatments for people affected by cancer.
