Boehringer Ingelheim Enters into Collaboration with Circle Pharma on New Precision Cancer Treatment
Thursday, October 10, 2024
Boehringer Ingelheim has entered into a research collaboration and licensing agreement with Circle Pharma to develop a novel cyclin inhibitor aimed at halting cancer cell growth.
This initiative is designed to provide a new treatment option for individuals with difficult-to-treat cancers.
Uncontrolled cell growth is a key characteristic of many types of tumours, driven by genetic alterations that disrupt the regulatory mechanisms of cell division.
Boehringer Ingelheim’s strategy focuses on targeting proteins involved in cell division, which presents a promising avenue for developing new cancer therapies.
Current treatments that target cyclin-dependent kinases often face challenges due to low selectivity and high toxicity. Circle Pharma has developed a macrocycle therapy approach that inhibits cyclins—proteins that control cell division—offering a potential solution to these issues.
This collaboration will enable Boehringer Ingelheim to further enhance its oncology research portfolio, which already includes various investigational therapies aimed at cancer cell-targeting and immuno-oncology.
As part of the agreement, Circle Pharma will receive an upfront payment along with potential milestone payments, which could total up to USD 607 million.
The goal is to create more effective treatment combinations for cancer patients.
