Charles River Strengthens Oncology Manufacturing Portfolio to Advance Cell and Gene Therapy Research
Friday, September 12, 2025
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (NYSE: CRL) has announced two new collaborations within its contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO), designed to advance oncology research and accelerate the development of cell and gene therapies for cancer treatment.
The first initiative involves a strategic alliance with the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy (PICI). Through this collaboration, PICI network members and partners will gain access to Charles River’s portfolio of preclinical drug discovery and development services, covering early discovery through to manufacturing. By combining research expertise with biologics testing and manufacturing, the alliance aims to improve knowledge transfer, reduce delays, and accelerate the delivery of novel cancer therapies.
The second collaboration supports Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in its Phase I clinical trials for recurrent solid tumours in children. Under this agreement, Charles River’s Cell and Gene Therapy (C>) capabilities and CDMO Centres of Excellence will provide essential materials for trial advancement. In 2024, CHLA received a $6 million multi-year award from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to develop innovative stem cell-based treatments for paediatric and adolescent patients.
Together, these collaborations expand Charles River’s oncology manufacturing portfolio and reinforce its role in advancing research that can deliver safer and more effective cancer treatments.
