Eli Lilly and EVA Pharma Secures Regulatory Approval for Insulin Production in Egypt
Wednesday, December 18, 2024
The Egyptian Drug Authority has approved the insulin glargine injection manufactured by EVA Pharma in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company.
This partnership is focused on ensuring a sustainable supply of high-quality, affordable human and analog insulin to over one million people annually living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), primarily in Africa.
As part of the agreement, Lilly provides EVA Pharma with active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for insulin at a significantly reduced cost. Additionally, Lilly offers pro-bono technology transfer to support EVA Pharma in formulating, filling, and finishing insulin vials and cartridges.
The collaboration reflects Lilly’s commitment to increasing global access to sustainable and affordable medicines. By working alongside health systems and industry stakeholders, Lilly aims to tackle systemic healthcare barriers and promote equitable access to life-changing treatments.
Lilly and EVA Pharma have broadened their partnership, with Lilly set to licence specific baricitinib manufacturing expertise to EVA Pharma. This will empower EVA Pharma to produce and distribute treatments for various immunological diseases across 56 low- to middle-income countries in Africa.
This initiative is part of Lilly’s 30x30 programme, which aspires to improve access to quality healthcare for 30 million people in resource-constrained settings every year by 2030.
