Evotec secures grants to advance tuberculosis treatment

Thursday, April 30, 2026

Evotec SE has secured two new grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support drug discovery and translational research in tuberculosis (TB). This follows four earlier TB grants from the foundation, valued at $4.9 million over 25 months and $5 million over 24 months.

The new funding highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to turn scientific research into practical treatments for major public health challenges. The programmes aim to expand the pipeline of new TB drug candidates and move the most promising combinations towards clinical evaluation. This approach is expected to reduce development risks and speed up progress towards shorter, safer and simpler treatment regimens.

Although TB can often be cured with existing antibiotics, current treatments are lengthy and complex, making them difficult for patients to complete. This is particularly challenging in drug-resistant cases, where treatment failure is more common.

The grants will allow Evotec to use its advanced translational platforms, including AI-enabled drug discovery tools, to identify and prioritise new therapies. The first grant focuses on developing a portfolio of small-molecule drug candidates with the potential to treat a broad range of TB patients. The aim is to shorten development timelines and improve the chances of successful outcomes.

The second grant supports non-clinical evaluation of next-generation TB drug combinations intended for late-stage clinical trials. This includes therapies that could be delivered as long-acting injectables, which may offer a more convenient and effective treatment option. Evotec will generate data on pharmacokinetics, efficacy and resistance to guide further development and reduce risks before clinical testing.

Overall, the funding is expected to strengthen efforts to deliver improved TB treatments and address ongoing challenges in managing the disease.
