Fujitsu Addresses ‘Drug Loss’ in Japan with New Ecosystem to Speed Up Clinical Trial Digitalisation
Monday, August 26, 2024
Fujitsu has announced plans to attract global clinical trials to Japan, addressing the challenge of ‘drug loss’.
Fujitsu is collaborating with Paradigm Health to develop a new clinical trial data ecosystem in Japan. By combining Paradigm’s global clinical trial platform with Fujitsu’s expertise in healthcare technologies, the partnership will enhance data collection and processing, providing pharmaceutical companies with valuable insights to optimise clinical trial design.
The initiative will also help medical institutions access information on clinical trials more efficiently, encouraging timely patient participation. Fujitsu plans to roll out these solutions in September 2024, starting with core clinical research hospitals.
This initiative, part of Fujitsu Uvance Healthy Living, will involve collaboration with pharmaceutical companies and medical institutions to create a new medical data ecosystem aimed at improving public health.
In July 2024, Fujitsu partnered with Paradigm Health a leading US-based clinical trial platform provider. By integrating this platform with Fujitsu’s Healthy Living Platform and the Fujitsu Kozuchi AI service, the partnership aims to streamline data collection from medical institutions and accelerate the clinical trial planning process.
Additionally, Fujitsu is launching a new service called Patient-centric Clinical Trials, which uses their advanced large language model (LLM) to automatically generate clinical trial documents. This service will be part of the Healthy Living portfolio and is expected to enhance the efficiency of clinical trial workflows.
Fujitsu’s new service, part of its Healthy Living portfolio, uses a specialised LLM to automate the creation of clinical trial documents, ensuring compliance with regulations. In a proof-of-concept trial, the LLM successfully generated about 80% of each document, potentially reducing documentation time by up to 50%. This service aims to optimise clinical trial workflows in Japan.
Fujitsu plans to extend its support beyond planning to include the implementation of clinical trials, with the goal of addressing issues throughout the entire process. By 2030, Fujitsu aims to generate 20 billion yen in revenue and contribute to a society where patients can quickly access the medicines they need and choose the most suitable treatments.
Japan faces challenges in clinical trials due to the dispersion of trial participants across multiple hospitals, leading to higher costs and longer timelines. Japan’s drug pricing policy has also resulted in the exclusion of the country from some global clinical trials. As of March 2023, 143 drugs approved outside Japan had not been approved for use within the country.
Fujitsu intends to accelerate the digitalisation of Japan's clinical trial environment by offering comprehensive support throughout the clinical trial process. The company aims to increase the number of global clinical trials in Japan, address the issue of drug loss, and contribute to a society where individuals can choose their preferred healthcare options.
