GC Biopharma Enters into Agreement with Novelty Nobility on New Geographic Atrophy Treatments
Monday, October 28, 2024
GC Biopharma has announced a partnership with Novelty Nobility to develop a new therapeutic option for geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults, progresses into two types: dry and wet. In its late stages, GA causes extensive retinal damage, ultimately leading to blindness, affecting around 1.5 million individuals in the United States alone.
While the first FDA-approved treatment for GA was introduced last year, it has shown limited effectiveness by only slowing the progression of the disease without reversing existing damage.
Additionally, side effects such as the onset of wet AMD or inflammation have been reported, leaving a significant unmet need for more effective and safer treatments for GA.
This collaboration between GC Biopharma and Novelty Nobility focuses on developing antibody-based protein therapies targeting key pathological elements associated with GA.
Initially, both companies will work on identifying novel proteins linked to the condition to select suitable therapeutic candidates. Novelty Nobility brings expertise in developing antibody treatments for retinal diseases, while GC Biopharma contributes its strengths in protein therapeutics.
Together, they aim to advance research beyond traditional areas of plasma derivatives and rare diseases through this collaborative effort.
