GlaxoSmithKline plc steps up Ebola Vaccine Development

Candidature acquired through Okairos, a biotechnology company, in 2013, GSK has ramped up its development of investigational Ebola vaccine. In association with the World Health Organization (WHO), regulators, and other partners so as to respond to the outbreak as soon as possible.GSK has been working with the National Institutes of Health to develop this vaccine candidate in response to the threat of Ebola.
Right now, the phase I safety trials of the vaccine candidate are underway in the US, UK, and Mali, and next series of trials are due to start in the following weeks. Initial data from the phase I trials are expected by the end of the year and if successful, the next phases of the clinical trial program will begin in early 2015, which will involve the vaccination of thousands of frontline healthcare workers in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.
