GSK Launches Shingles Vaccine in Malaysia

Saturday, September 14, 2024

GSK has introduced its new Herpes Zoster vaccine, Shingrix (MAL24056002ARZ), in Malaysia.

Shingles, caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), can lead to severe pain and, in some cases, long-lasting nerve pain known as PHN. The vaccine is designed to address the decline in immune response that occurs with age and in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Recombinant Zoster Vaccine, Adjuvanted (RZV), this non-live, recombinant subunit vaccine aims to prevent shingles (herpes zoster) and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) in adults aged 50 and over.

RZV is administered intramuscularly in two doses and is initially available to adults aged 50 and above, as well as those aged 18 and over who are at increased risk of developing herpes zoster.

Clinical trials of RZV have shown high efficacy, with up to 97% effectiveness in adults aged 50 and over. Interim data suggests that vaccine efficacy remains above 80% even six to ten years after initial vaccination.

RZV has been positively received and is recommended by the Malaysia Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy for adults 50 and over, as well as immunosuppressed individuals aged 18 and over.

This launch represents GSK's commitment to improving public health in Malaysia by offering a new tool to combat the impact of shingles.
