HanAll Biopharma, Daewoong Pharmaceutical, and NurrOn Pharmaceuticals Successfully Complete Phase 1 Trial for Parkinson's Therapy

HanAll Biopharma, Daewoong Pharmaceutical, and NurrOn Pharmaceuticals have successfully completed the Phase 1 clinical trial of HL192 (ATH-399A), a potential disease-modifying therapy for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder primarily affecting movement. It is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, particularly in an area called the substantia nigra. Dopamine is a critical neurotransmitter responsible for coordinating smooth and controlled muscle movements.

The study achieved its primary goals of safety and tolerability across five different ascending dose groups, marking significant progress in the development of treatments for this debilitating neurological condition.

The first-in-human study assessed HL192 (ATH-399A) using single ascending dose (SAD), multiple ascending dose (MAD), and food effect components. The trial involved 76 healthy participants, including older adults, and demonstrated a favourable safety profile.

No dose-dependent adverse effects were observed, and the treatment was well-tolerated, with all dose levels remaining within safe limits based on pre-determined no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) thresholds.

This early-stage success is a key step towards addressing the unmet need for therapies that go beyond symptom management in Parkinson's disease. Unlike current treatments, HL192 (ATH-399A) is designed to target the underlying mechanisms of the condition, offering potential for a more effective and long-lasting impact.

The trial was supported by a $1.7 million grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has emphasised the importance of advancing therapies for the more than six million people affected by Parkinson’s globally.

HanAll Biopharma, Daewoong Pharmaceutical, and NurrOn Pharmaceuticals are preparing for the next phase of clinical trials, focusing on Parkinson's patients. This collaborative effort aims to further evaluate the safety and effectiveness of HL192 (ATH-399A), driving forward progress in an area with significant unmet medical need.
