Illumina® introduces Protein Prep to advance proteomic insights for drug discovery and development
Thursday, September 04, 2025
Illumina Inc. has introduced Illumina Protein Prep, a new assay designed to enhance next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based proteomics research at scale. Previously offered through an early-access programme, the solution is now available globally, allowing researchers to integrate proteomics with large-scale genomics studies. This is expected to generate fresh insights into cancer, cardiometabolic conditions, and immune-related diseases, while providing a simplified sample-to-insight workflow for discovery and clinical research.
NGS-based proteomics delivers speed, accuracy, reproducibility, and scalability, which are essential for large-scale studies and the drug discovery process. As a core element of multiomics, proteomics helps improve understanding of disease mechanisms and supports progress in biologic discovery.
Illumina Protein Prep is powered by SOMAmer™ technology and can analyse 9,500 distinct human protein targets, the highest number measured with an NGS readout. This capacity provides deeper insight into protein biology and the role of proteins in gene expression, disease progression, biomarker discovery, and precision therapy development.
When combined with the scalability of Illumina NovaSeq™ sequencing platforms, the assay enables researchers to study thousands of proteins simultaneously in a single experiment. The data generated can then be processed using Illumina DRAGEN™ Protein Quantification and Connected Multiomics software, turning complex proteomic information into clear results. This integrated approach supports pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations, and translational researchers in moving efficiently from discovery to therapeutic development.
