MaxCyte Enters into Partnership with Kamau Therapeutics to Advance Gene Therapy Development

Monday, September 16, 2024

MaxCyte has announced a strategic platform licence (SPL) agreement with Kamau Therapeutics.

MaxCyte’s ExPERT™ platform represents the next generation of electroporation technology, offering high transfection efficiency, scalability, and advanced functionality.

Kamau is developing a new class of therapies using high-efficiency targeted gene integration to address serious and life-threatening diseases, including sickle cell disease (SCD). Their platform, which enhances CRISPR-Cas9 technology through homology-directed repair (HDR), provides a template for DNA repair. The company’s lead investigational programme, nula-cel, is currently in clinical development for SCD.

As part of the agreement, Kamau will have non-exclusive rights for research, clinical, and commercial use of MaxCyte’s Flow Electroporation® technology and ExPERT™ platform. In exchange, MaxCyte will receive annual licensing fees and revenue related to the programme.

MaxCyte’s Flow Electroporation technology and support are expected to help Kamau optimise their clinical manufacturing process, manage risks, and accelerate the development of their product candidate for SCD.

Kamau aims to use HDR to overcome previous limitations in gene editing and develop curative therapies for serious genetic diseases with unmet medical needs. This collaboration with MaxCyte leverages their proven non-viral technology to support Kamau’s goals.

This partnership with Kamau is MaxCyte’s 29th clinical and commercial collaboration, generating milestone revenue and programme-related income.
