Merck Expands Singapore Biosafety Testing Laboratory to Support Asia Pacific Biopharma Sector
Tuesday, August 11, 2026
Merck is expanding its BioReliance laboratory in Singapore to strengthen analytical and biosafety testing services for biopharmaceutical companies across the Asia Pacific region.
Biosafety testing is an important part of the drug development and manufacturing process, helping manufacturers assess the safety and quality of biologic medicines and meet regulatory requirements.
The expansion builds on Merck's more than 75 years of experience in biosafety and analytical testing and will expand its local contract testing services for the region's growing biopharmaceutical industry.
The Singapore facility will become the first BioReliance site in the Asia Pacific region to offer both cell line characterisation services and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) next-generation sequencing (NGS) capabilities.
It will also provide advanced molecular testing methods, including Merck's Blazar platform for rapid virus detection. These technologies are intended to support quality control testing of biologic medicines while reducing reliance on animal-based testing through the use of advanced molecular methods.
The laboratory was established in Singapore in 2018. Following the expansion, its total area will exceed 1,000 sq m.
The expanded facility is expected to provide local access to advanced testing capabilities, helping biopharmaceutical companies support development timelines, quality control and regulatory requirements.
The investment also forms part of Merck's wider strategy to strengthen the life sciences ecosystem in Asia Pacific and expand its testing capabilities closer to customers in the region.
