MilliporeSigma Collaborates with Opentrons Labworks to Advance Laboratory Automation

Friday, January 24, 2025

MilliporeSigma has entered into a multi-year collaboration with Opentrons Labworks.

The partnership aims to automate assay kits on a customised Opentrons Flex® workstation, supporting advancements in laboratory automation.

The collaboration will involve scientists and engineers developing and validating platform workflows that incorporate automation-enabled assays from the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

By integrating these assays with the bespoke workstation, the partnership seeks to enhance laboratory processes by reducing manual handling and repetitive tasks. This is expected to improve consistency, throughput, and overall productivity, enabling researchers to concentrate on more complex scientific endeavours.

This agreement highlights the focus on advancing laboratory automation and digitalisation to boost efficiency, safety, and success rates in scientific research and therapeutic development. Customers will be able to order the workstations and assay kits from mid-2025.

The applications are set to cover a wide range of workflows, including protein sample preparation, molecular and cellular assays, and various biochemical and chemistry workflows that will be introduced during the partnership.

The collaboration combines the automation expertise and service capabilities of Opentrons with the robust R&D, supply chain, and quality systems of the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

Together, they aim to provide reliable solutions that streamline research processes, from sample preparation to analysis, across areas such as immunodetection, protein research, enzyme technology, genome editing, omics research, pharmaceutical development, testing services, and cell culture.

This partnership builds on existing innovations in biology from the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, including tools like the Millicell® DCI Digital Cell Imager, which accelerates cell culture analysis through an intuitive interface.

It also aligns with the company’s commitment to delivering next-generation biology solutions, demonstrated by recent acquisitions such as HUB Organoids Holding B.V.

By combining their respective strengths, MilliporeSigma and Opentrons aim to deliver cutting-edge automation solutions that drive scientific progress and enhance laboratory productivity.
