Rectify and Boehringer Ingelheim Partner to Develop New Treatments for Chronic Kidney Disease
Tuesday, December 23, 2025
Rectify Pharmaceuticals has entered into a strategic research and licensing collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim to support the development of new treatments for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and related conditions.
Chronic kidney disease affects approximately one in ten adults worldwide, impacting around 850 million people. The condition is often associated with serious complications, including vascular calcification and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. By combining scientific expertise, the collaboration seeks to address this significant unmet medical need through innovative therapeutic approaches.
ABCC6 plays a key role in preventing harmful calcification by regulating levels of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi), a natural inhibitor of calcification. In CKD and certain rare genetic disorders, such as pseudoxanthoma elasticum and generalised arterial calcification of infancy, reduced ABCC6 activity leads to lower PPi levels and increased cardiovascular risk. Rectify’s orally available PFMs have shown potential to restore or enhance ABCC6 function, offering a new approach to slowing disease progression.
The partnership aims to advance first-in-class, disease-modifying therapies that target the underlying causes of cardiorenal dysfunction.
The collaboration will focus on Rectify’s positive functional modulator (PFM) platform, which is designed to restore and improve membrane protein function. Together, the companies will develop oral small-molecule therapies that enhance the function of the ABCC6 protein and help reduce abnormal calcification, a major contributor to disease progression in chronic kidney conditions.
Under the agreement, Rectify will receive an upfront payment and may earn up to US$448 million in preclinical, clinical, regulatory and commercial milestone payments, along with tiered royalties on future product sales.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to developing novel treatments that target the root causes of chronic kidney disease and improve long-term outcomes for patients.
