Samsung Bioepis Enters into Agreement with Proteina for AI-Based Antibody Therapeutics Development
Friday, July 10, 2026
Samsung Bioepis has entered into a licence agreement with Proteina to collaborate on a government-supported national research and development (R&D) initiative focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI)-based antibody therapeutics.
The initiative, titled Development and Demonstration of Antibody Biopharmaceuticals Using AI Models, was launched in October 2025 with support from South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare. The project is being carried out by a consortium comprising Samsung Bioepis, Proteina and Professor Minkyung Baek's research team at the School of Biological Sciences, Seoul National University. Financial terms of the project were not disclosed.
Under the agreement, the partners aim to identify multiple novel AI-designed antibody drug candidates by 2027. Samsung Bioepis will lead preclinical development through to the investigational new drug (IND) application stage, while Proteina will be responsible for the discovery of novel antibody candidates. Samsung Bioepis also holds an option to license the candidates for clinical development and commercialisation, subject to milestone and royalty payments.
Proteina will contribute its proprietary antibody optimisation and performance measurement platform, which is designed to accelerate antibody validation and enable high-throughput screening of antibody sequences.
The collaboration expands Samsung Bioepis' activities beyond biosimilars into the development of novel antibody therapeutics by integrating AI-driven drug discovery with preclinical development.
