Sun Pharma Announces Acquisition of Checkpoint Therapeutics

Tuesday, March 11, 2025

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has announced an agreement to acquire Checkpoint Therapeutics.

cSCC is the second most common skin cancer in the U.S., with around 1.8 million cases annually. Key risks include UV exposure and immune suppression.

While most cases are treatable, about 40,000 become advanced each year, leading to an estimated 15,000 deaths. The disease can also cause disfigurement and functional issues, especially in the head and neck region.

Checkpoint focuses on developing treatments for solid tumour cancers and has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for UNLOXCYT™ (cosibelimab-ipdl).

This treatment is indicated for adults with metastatic or locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) who are not suitable for curative surgery or radiation.

Checkpoint views the agreement as an opportunity to accelerate the treatment’s access across key markets, including the United States and Europe.

Through this acquisition, Sun Pharma aims to expand its oncology portfolio and strengthen its presence in the onco-dermatology segment.

The company plans to leverage its global reach to make UNLOXCYT more widely available to patients with advanced cSCC.
