Thermo Fisher Scientific Launches Advanced Multimodal Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope for Materials Science Research
Tuesday, October 15, 2024
Thermo Fisher Scientific unveiled its latest innovation, the Thermo Scientific™ Iliad™ (S)TEM (Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope), at the European Microscopy Congress 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The system is controlled by Thermo Fisher’s Velox software ecosystem, which supports both spectroscopy and imaging. Iliad’s components can also be operated using Python scripting via Autoscript, allowing advanced microscope control and enabling AI-driven data collection and processing.
This advanced multimodal analytical platform provides researchers with enhanced insights into the chemical composition of modern materials at the atomic scale.
Building on Thermo Fisher’s established expertise in scanning transmission electron microscopy, the Iliad (S)TEM integrates multiple technologies into a single, streamlined workflow.
Its design is aimed at facilitating comprehensive chemical and structural analysis through energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and the new NanoPulser for optimising electron dose.
The development of Iliad involved collaboration with experts, such as Professor Jo Verbeeck from the University of Antwerp, ensuring a focus on data quantification and improving the reproducibility of EELS.
With its integrated hardware and software, Iliad (S)TEM offers scientists in various fields the ability to tackle complex challenges, contributing to advancements that benefit global health, environmental sustainability, and safety.
