Valo Health and Novo Nordisk Expand Partnership to Develop Cardiometabolic Diseases Treatment
Wednesday, January 08, 2025
Valo Health and Novo Nordisk have broadened their collaboration to focus on developing innovative treatments for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
The partnership leverages Valo’s extensive human data and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered computational platform alongside Novo Nordisk’s expertise in cardiometabolic conditions.
Initially formed in September 2023, the collaboration originally aimed to develop up to 11 drug programmes centred on cardiovascular diseases. Under this agreement, Valo was eligible to receive up to $2.7 billion in milestone payments, along with research funding and potential royalties.
The expanded agreement now includes an additional nine drug programmes, bringing the total to 20. Valo will receive $190 million upfront through a combination of payments, equity investment, and a near-term milestone payment.
The potential value of the collaboration now stands at approximately $4.6 billion, alongside continued research and development funding and royalty opportunities.
This enhanced partnership continues to utilise Valo’s Opal Computational Platform™ and combines human genetic and real-world patient data with Novo Nordisk’s scientific expertise.
The companies aim to discover novel therapeutic targets, validate them using preclinical models, and develop small molecule treatments designed using AI.
Significant progress has already been achieved, with several novel targets identified for potential cardiometabolic drug development. Current work includes multiple preclinical programmes focusing on small molecules.
The expanded collaboration aims to deepen efforts across the entire drug discovery process, with a particular emphasis on obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions.
This partnership reflects the growing importance of combining human-centric AI with cutting-edge research to tackle cardiometabolic diseases and develop effective new therapies.
