Sustainable pharma manufacturing is no longer optional—it is essential. Alfa Laval’s advanced disc stack centrifuges, energy efficient heat exchangers, and efficient hygienic fluid handling solutions enable pharmaceutical producers to reduce water usage, cut energy consumption, and increase product yield. Together, these innovations help the industry meet ambitious ESG targets without compromising output or quality.

Sustainable pharma manufacturing

As the pharmaceutical industry scales up to meet global demand, manufacturers are under growing pressure to do so sustainably. ESG goals are now central to business strategy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder expectations. Achieving these goals requires smarter, cleaner, and more efficient technologies across upstream and downstream processes. Sustainability is engineered into the core of Alfa Laval’s separation, heat transfer, and fluid handling solutions. Our portfolio enables pharmaceutical and biotech producers to reduce resource consumption, minimise waste, and operate at higher efficiency—all while improving product quality and yield.

CultureOne™ (Single-Use) Bactofuge

A key example is our disc stack centrifuge technology optimised for cell culture harvest. Traditional clarification methods often lead to product loss and high consumable usage downstream. Alfa Laval’s Culturefuge (Stainless Steel) and CultureOne™ (Single-Use) Bactofuge technology enhances solids concentration which reduces product loss, enabling customers to recover a greater proportion of valuable biologic product. Higher yield directly reduces the environmental footprint per gram of product, while also improving cost-effectiveness. Water reduction is another sustainability priority for modern pharma facilities. With intelligent hydraulic design and optimised flushing cycles, our disc stack centrifuges significantly lower the volume of water required during operation and cleaning. This is crucial for plants operating in water stressed regions or seeking to comply with stringent internal sustainability metrics.

Beyond separation technology, Alfa Laval supports sustainability in thermal processing. Alfa Laval’s Pharma-line shell-and-tube heat exchangers are specifically engineered for high thermal efficiency to meet the stringent demands of heating or cooling of media, resulting in lower steam and cooling load. In addition, Alfa Laval’s energy efficient plate heat exchangers are designed to capture and reuse thermal energy, recover heat from waste streams, and reduce steam consumption. These solutions contribute directly to lowering plant energy consumption, operating costs and CO₂ emissions.

Sustainability extends into fluid handling as well, which includes Alfa Laval’s range of hygienic pumps, valves, tank cleaning and mixers, engineered for low energy consumption and optimised clean in place (CIP) performance. These innovations help reduce water, chemicals, and energy required during production and cleaning—critical components of any sustainability roadmap. Pumps account for up to 25% of a typical pharma plant’s energy use, so optimising pump efficiency creates a large sustainability effect. Alfa Laval UltraPure pumps are optimised to reduce the high energy burden associated with pharmaceutical water systems, delivering substantial energy savings and lowering operating emissions. Within hygienic mixing applications, the Alfa Laval LeviMag further strengthens Alfa Laval’s commitment to sustainable processing. Designed with a permanent magnetically levitated impeller and a seal-free configuration, LeviMag helps to increase production yield and eliminates mechanical wear and minimises particle generation, helping maintain product purity while reducing maintenance interventions and component replacement. Its gentle yet efficient mixing technology protects sensitive pharmaceutical ingredients and is optimised for CIP.

By integrating resource efficient technologies across the entire manufacturing process, manufacturers can achieve meaningful progress toward their ESG commitments. At Alfa Laval, we partner with customers to design and implement solutions that are both environmentally responsible and operationally reliable. With support from our Digital Solutions Centre, customers gain a reliable service partner—bringing local competence and accessibility in each country to keep operations running at their best. Sustainable pharma manufacturing is not just about compliance; it is a competitive advantage. With rising demand and growing expectations for responsible production, the time to invest in smarter, cleaner, and more efficient technologies is now. Alfa Laval is committed to helping the industry achieve these goals—responsibly, reliably, and at scale.
