FUJIFILM Biotechnologies to Invest US$500 Million (£400 Million) in Teesside, United Kingdom

Introduction:

FUJIFILM Biotechnologies has announced an investment of approximately US$500 million (£400 million) to expand its biomanufacturing and process development facilities in Teesside, United Kingdom.

Features:

The development involves the expansion of biomanufacturing and process development facilities to support the production of biologics, vaccines, and advanced therapies. Biopharmaceutical manufacturing will utilise single-use systems with disposable components, alongside bioreactors with capacities of 2,000 L and 5,000 L, bringing total bioreactor capacity to up to 19,000 L for small- and mid-scale production.

Production processes will also support antibody manufacturing activities, all conducted under Good Manufacturing Practice standards.

The project includes a dedicated centre for process development and laboratory operations, equipped to support high-throughput and continuous process development, effectively doubling the existing laboratory footprint at the site.

The expanded facility will support the production of medicines targeting cancer, neurodegenerative, and rare diseases, while being integrated within a broader global biomanufacturing network. The manufacturing facility will cover approximately 110,000 square feet, with the process development centre spanning around 102,200 square feet.

Operations are expected to commence in 2026.
