Novo Nordisk to Invest over US$467 Million (€400 Million) in Athlone, Ireland
Introduction:
Novo Nordisk has announced plans to invest over US$467 million (€400 million) to expand its tablet manufacturing facility in Athlone, Ireland.
Features:
The development involves the expansion of an existing tablet manufacturing facility to support the production of oral GLP-1 treatments used in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity. These therapies help regulate blood sugar levels and support long-term disease management.
Production processes will include tablet formulation, processing, and packaging activities, with a focus on increasing the output of oral solid dosage forms.
The project includes the upgrade and retrofit of existing buildings and production systems, alongside the installation of new equipment to enhance tablet manufacturing capabilities. All manufacturing activities will comply with established regulatory and quality standards. The facility will form part of a wider global pharmaceutical manufacturing network, supporting the continued supply of approved treatments for chronic diseases and meeting demand in markets outside the United States.
The site will span approximately 182,000 square metres, with construction expected to be completed in phases between 2027 and 2028.
