MannKind Introduces First-and-Only Afrezza® Therapy for Treating Diabetes in Children and Adolescents
MannKind has introduced Afrezza® for the treatment of diabetes in children and adolescents aged six years and older requiring mealtime insulin therapy.
Afrezza is an inhaled rapid-acting mealtime insulin designed to improve glycaemic control in paediatric patients with diabetes. Administered through oral inhalation, the therapy provides a needle-free alternative to injectable mealtime insulin while enabling rapid insulin absorption to help manage post-meal blood glucose levels.
The approval is supported by clinical studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of Afrezza in paediatric patients. The therapy demonstrated effective glycaemic control with a safety profile consistent with previous clinical experience in adults, supporting its use in children and adolescents aged six years and older.
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterised by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from insufficient insulin production or impaired insulin action. Children and adolescents with diabetes often require lifelong insulin therapy to maintain blood glucose control and reduce the risk of long-term complications. Despite advances in insulin delivery systems, many patients continue to rely on multiple daily injections for mealtime insulin administration.
